Mountain Bike Riding?

by , under General, Rehabilitation

Never in 1,000,000 years would I have thought it was possible to go mountain bike riding again. In between Melbourne and Geelong is a national park area known as the Youyangs. It is a steep hill that rises to about 400 m above a surrounding plain. At the base of the hill is a fabulous set of graded mountain bike paths. They are great for the kids to learn on so I thought I would try taking my three wheeler out for Ashley’s first mountain bike!

It was incredibly successful and a lot of fun for all involved. Ashley managed to get through about 17 km of singletrack trails and I covered about 12 km. My three wheeler bottomed out a few times and the slick tyres were an issue. Food for thought however as my mind is already busy designing a vehicle that will enable me to tackle slightly more challenging terrain. My riding speed is at about walking speed or just above when going up slight inclines and at about jogging speed when going down slight declines. The best part of the trip is just being part of the family experience in the bush, as well is it being mildly exhilarating as the tail end of the bike slides out going downhill and around the corners on slick tyres!

Bear it in mind if you are looking for a companion on a bushwalk or want to take the kids mountain bike riding. Also lads don’t forget about me if you are heading out. At the very least my riding can provide you with some light entertainment. A big thankyou to the Rourke family for embracing my “you just don’t know until you give it a go” attitude.

Over the last 18 months I have been racking my brain as to what I could do with my skills to spend time in the real world and contribute to the household. I would get incredibly frustrated working in the IT environment that I thrived in before as what I brought to my job prior to the accident was energy and knowledge. Obviously I still have the knowledge, but not the energy to fly interstate and work full-time. So I have come up with some alternatives that I can do on a part-time basis to hopefully hang out with some good people. This is what I have come up with:

  • Website and Social Media Marketing. I have done some additional training in marketing in relation to how the World Wide Web works with search engines and how to combine this with social media to market goods and services. I am aiming to service small businesses at a more than reasonable price. More importantly I think I have a good skill set to help out small businesses.
  • Rehabilitation from Spinal Cord Injury (SCI). I have put together a page and will be adding information to share my journey from the accident through my recovery. I am hoping this resource will be useful to others who suffer a similar fate. I am happy to speak to audiences about my rehabilitation journey and provide information where I can to help others.
  • My Insurance Story. I think my story around life, income protection and total permanent disability (TPD) insurance is a compelling one. I’m offering my services in particular to the insurance industry to tell my story about what having these insurances has meant in my journey so far.

If you have any questions or comments, or even a potential piece of work, please feel free to contact me.
